Some couples have a parent, grandparent, sibling or other significant person who cannot be at the ceremony for many reasons. Often is a close friend or relative who is deceased, or who cannot travel to the wedding because of distance or infirmity. Sometimes a brother or sister is deployed to a war zone and cannot come home. The couple wishing to acknowledge this person can use a memorial candle or flower to represent their presense. The candle or flower can be placed in front of a picture of the person being honored. This is done before the ceremony itself starts so that sadness is not part of the ceremony. It is a touching tribute to loved ones but does not detract from the joy of the day.
