In some cases one or both of the couple getting married have children from a previous relationship. It is important that these children are supportive of the marriage. It helps to include them in the ceremony. In the medallion ceremony, the future step-parent presents a "medallion" to the child or children of the partner. This medallion can be anything that is meaningful to the child. The most common medallion used is a pendant with three intertwined rings on it, but one parent gave the child a dinosaur's tooth because this was the most important thing he could think of for his bride's son. The child was thrilled.
